If you've bought an Upsensed candle before, you might notice something new on the label this holiday season: soy wax | hand poured in HTX.
That's not a typo or a quiet supplier swap. We changed our wax on purpose, and you deserve to hear why from us rather than piecing it together from a label.
I'm a labor and delivery nurse, so checking what's actually in something is a habit I can't turn off. I want our candles to be just as easy to read. So here's what changed, why we changed it, what stayed exactly the same, and what it means the next time you light one.
Why We Made the Switch
Our coconut-apricot blend made candles we were proud of, but a few things kept pointing us toward soy.
A more consistent burn in both sizes. Every scent now comes in a 7.5 oz single-wick jar and a 16 oz double-wick jar. Soy gave us the most even, predictable melt across both, which means fewer tunnels and more candle you actually get to use.
Scent that fills the room. A candle is only as good as what it does to a room. In our testing, soy carried our fragrances the way we designed them, from the first top notes to the warm base that lingers after the flame is out.
Steady, reliable sourcing. Small-batch shouldn't mean "sorry, sold out for six weeks while we wait on wax." Soy is widely grown and reliably available, which helps us keep your favorites in stock.
A good candle at a fair price. We want Upsensed to be the candle you buy for yourself on a regular Tuesday, not just as a once-a-year splurge. Soy lets us keep a hand-poured, small-batch candle starting at $24 without cutting corners anywhere that matters.
What Soy Wax Actually Is
Soy wax is made from soybean oil that's been processed into a solid, creamy wax. It's plant-based and comes from a crop that's replanted every year, and if you ever spill some on the counter, it cleans up with warm, soapy water.
Most mass-market candles are made with paraffin, a wax that comes from petroleum refining, or with blends that mix paraffin into other waxes. Soy is the wax most people picture when they think of a hand-poured candle, and it's the one we now use in every jar, at 100%. No paraffin, no blends.
How Soy Burns (and Why It Matters)
Soy has a few personality traits worth knowing.
It burns slow and steady. Soy has a relatively low melting point, so it burns cooler and slower than many other waxes, which generally means more hours of burn time from the same jar.
It has a memory. The first burn sets the pattern for every burn after. If you blow it out before the melted wax reaches the edges of the jar, it'll tend to melt only that far from then on, and that's how tunneling starts. Our guide to fixing and preventing candle tunneling covers what to do if it happens.
It can look a little imperfect, and that's normal. Natural soy sometimes forms a soft white bloom on its surface or sides, called frosting, and the top can set slightly bumpy after a burn. Both are purely cosmetic. They don't affect the scent or how the candle burns, and the top smooths out again the next time you light it.
Are Soy Candles Non-Toxic?
Here's the honest answer: whether a candle is a cleaner choice depends on the whole candle, not just the wax. Three things matter.
- The wax. Ours is 100% soy.
- The fragrance. Ours is free from phthalates and parabens. Here's why phthalates are worth avoiding in candles.
- The wick. Ours are 100% cotton, with no metal core.
You'll find plenty of claims online that paraffin is dangerous. The research is more mixed than those headlines suggest, and we'd rather tell you exactly what's in our candles than try to scare you about anyone else's. For the bigger picture, read are scented candles toxic? and our guide to clean-burning candles.
How you burn a candle matters too. A trimmed wick and a spot away from drafts keep the flame calm and cut down on soot, whatever the wax.
What Didn't Change
The wax is new. Almost everything else is exactly how it's always been.
- Every candle is still hand-poured in small batches in Houston.
- We still use 100% cotton wicks: one in the 7.5 oz, two in the 16 oz.
- Our fragrances are still phthalate-free and built in layers, with top, middle and base notes that change as the candle burns.
- 5% of every purchase still goes to the Anxiety & Depression Association of America. Read more about our mission.
- Your favorite scents still smell like your favorite scents.
How to Get the Best Burn From a Soy Candle
A soy candle rewards a little care up front.
- Make the first burn count. Let the melted wax reach the edges of the jar before you blow it out. A good rule of thumb is about an hour per inch of jar width, usually 2–3 hours for the 7.5 oz and 3–4 hours for the 16 oz.
- Trim the wick to ¼ inch before every burn. It keeps the flame steady and the glass clean.
- Cap burns at about four hours. Longer burns overheat the wick and the wax.
- Keep it out of drafts. Fans, vents and open windows make the flame flicker and smoke.
- Stop at the last ½ inch of wax, then clean out the jar and give it a second life.
Our complete candle care guide has the rest, and if your candle ever seems quieter than it should, here's why you might not be able to smell your candle.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is soy wax better than paraffin? Soy is plant-based and renewable, burns slower and cooler, and is the wax we trust for an even burn. Paraffin is made from petroleum. Both can make a good candle; soy is the one that fits how we want to make ours.
Do soy candles smell as strong? A well-made soy candle fills a room. Scent throw depends on the fragrance, the wick and how long the candle burns. Give it 30–45 minutes to build a full melt pool before you judge it.
Why does the top of my soy candle look bumpy or frosted? That's natural soy doing what it does. Frosting and a bumpy top after burning are cosmetic only and don't affect the scent or burn.
Is my older coconut-apricot candle still good to burn? Absolutely. Burn it the same way: full first burn, trimmed wick, about four hours at a time.
