When you pick up a candle, you probably check the scent first. Maybe the burn time. Possibly the vessel, if you’re planning to keep it on display. The wax? Most people never give it a thought.
That’s a shame, because wax is the engine of the entire candle. It decides how strongly the fragrance fills your room, how evenly the candle burns, how much soot ends up in your air, and whether that 40-hour burn time on the label is a promise or a fiction. Two candles with the exact same fragrance oil can perform completely differently based on nothing but the wax underneath.

So this is the full explanation: what the major waxes actually do, why we chose this particular pairing, and how to read any candle label like someone who knows what they’re looking at.
The Major Candle Waxes in 60 Seconds
Every candle wax is a trade-off between cost, burn quality, scent performance, and cleanliness. Here’s the honest version of each.
Paraffin is a petroleum byproduct and the workhorse of mass-market candles. It’s cheap, holds a lot of fragrance, and throws scent aggressively—which is why grocery-store candles can smell so strong.
The trade-offs: it burns hotter and faster, produces more soot than plant-based waxes, and it’s the wax most shoppers looking for cleaner-burning candles choose to avoid.
Note: A lot of natural, plant-based luxury waxes use a small amount of food-grade paraffin. A small amount for stability still creates a clean-burning candle.
Soy is the most common plant-based alternative, burns slower and cleaner than paraffin, and it’s renewable and affordable.
However, soy has real limitations: a weaker hot throw—the scent a candle gives off while burning—a tendency toward rough, frosted tops, and inconsistent adhesion to glass.
Coconut is one of the most premium waxes in candle making. Made from cold-pressed coconut oil, it has a low melt point, a silky, creamy appearance, and excellent scent throw. Fragrance disperses beautifully through a coconut wax melt pool.
Its softness is also its weakness: pure coconut wax is often too soft to hold structure on its own, especially in warmer climates.
Apricot wax, made from apricot kernel oil, is the newest of the group and is still rare outside luxury candle making. It’s prized for its luxurious, almost buttery texture, smooth, glass-like finish, and ability to carry fragrance evenly while burning with real stability.
It’s almost never used alone, but as a blending wax, it’s exceptional.
Beeswax deserves a mention for completeness. It’s natural and burns very cleanly, but it carries its own honeyed scent, which can compete with added fragrance. For that reason, it’s often better suited to unscented candles.
Why Blends Beat Single Waxes

If each wax has strengths and weaknesses, the obvious question is: why not pair waxes so the strengths cover the gaps?
That’s exactly what a blend does, and it’s why nearly every high-end candle on the market today is poured in one.
A well-formulated blend lets a candle maker tune three things at once:
- Melt Point. Pairing a low-melt wax like coconut with a firmer, more structured wax produces a blend that liquefies easily enough to release fragrance quickly but remains stable enough to burn slowly and evenly.
- Scent Throw. Different waxes project scent differently, but the melting, temperature, pour temperature, and cure time also play a large role in a candle's scent throw. Blends can take the enhanced throw of one wax and mix it with the stability of another. The melt pool is where the fragrance throw comes from, so making sure to burn your candle for 3-4 hours at a time ensures the best performance and is one of the best defenses against tunneling.
- Burn Cleanliness and Appearance. Blends minimize the frosting, cracking, and rough tops that single plant waxes can be prone to. Plant-based blends also produce minimal soot compared with paraffin.
A single wax forces you to accept its flaws. A blend lets you design around them—but which waxes go into the blend matters just as much as blending itself.

How Wax Affects Burn Time—and Your Cost Per Hour
Burn-time claims only mean something in the context of wax. Paraffin burns hot and fast, while a plant-based blend with a controlled melt point burns measurably slower. That’s why comparing candles based on price alone can be misleading.

Do the quick math instead: divide the price by the stated number of burn hours. A $12 paraffin candle that burns for 20 hours costs $0.60 per hour of fragrance. A well-made blended candle priced at $34 with more than 55 hours of burn time costs about the same per hour while burning cleaner, throwing scent more consistently, and looking far better on your shelf while it does it. Cost per hour is the number the price tag hides.
How to Read a Candle Label Like an Expert
Whatever brand you’re buying, 30 seconds with the label or online product description can tell you most of what you need to know.
- Check the fragrance claim. “Phthalate-free fragrance” should be stated outright, not implied.
- Find the wick material. Cotton or wood should be clearly named. Cotton wicks should also be lead-free, as all reputable cotton wicks are today.
- Compare the burn time with the candle’s size. A seven- or eight-ounce candle claiming more than 60 hours of burn time, or a large three-wick candle claiming only 25 hours, may be a sign that the stated numbers were not thoroughly tested.
- Look for where and how it's made. Hand-poured, small-batch candles are typically tested by the same people responsible for making and selling them—literally, in our case, in Houston.
If a candle passes all five checks, you’re almost certainly holding a product made by people who care about the details you can’t see.
